VW POLO - EPC LIGHT

EPC LIGHT

Yesterday my VW Polo just wouldn't start, the engine cranked, but sounded as if it didn't crank fast enough in order to start. A good few hundred bucks later for a new battery, she started just fine. I suppose after four years, one should expect a battery to give up the ghost.  I thought it was just peculiar that it died without any prior warning, without lazy cranking or dim headlights or a croaky hooter. Anyway, this morning when I started my VW Polo Highline she had some really serious issues. It just wouldn't rev-up. When I looked at the instrument panel, the amber EPC warning light  was lit-up yet she idled perfectly normal. The moment I accelerated there was no power, but could only rev to 1200 rpm, it kinda seemed like fuel starvation

Only when  I revved; it seemed like there just wasn't enough fuel available, it sort of smothered. The  Amber / yellow EPC light on the dashboard is normally on when I turn on the car's ignition, as can be seen below, but the moment she starts, the EPC warning light goes off, or resets the EPC light on a Polo, which was perfectly normal as far as was  concerned.

I experienced this yellow EPC light issue once before, or at least something very similar a few months ago. I was driving through Melkbos Strand with my VW Polo, traveling at about 100kmph. As I passed a high school where some dudes were playing  soccer. The very next thing I saw, was their soccer ball coming over the school fence, it hit the road, bounced a few times  and  rolled directly towards the front of the car. There was no way I was going to swerve to avoid striking the ball because the pavements were like really high and I didn't want to damage my magwheels. There was also an oncoming car approaching from the opposite direction, so I couldn't even cross lanes to avoid it,  I just had to go over the ball. By this time, I had already reduced my speed to about 40Kmph. Somehow the ball got jammed between the undercarriage (sump / front suspension) of the Polo and the road. Instead of it rolling, I could hear it chafing along the asphalt. Then the ball suddenly burst with a tremendously loud explosion.

Immediately the EPC light came on, and there was no power. The car just rolled forward until it came to a halt. My foot on the accelerator had no effect. I tried revving the engine but to no avail, it just wouldn't rev. So I switched it off. A few seconds later I started the car and it started just fine but the EPC light stayed on and now, it at least revved to 1200 RPM. I needed to get off the road or at least to the nearest filling station / garage workshop. So I drove very slowly and even when I tried to go faster the car just wasn't going to go faster that 10kpm, even with my foot flat on the accelerator. Eventually... I arrived at the filling station, switched off the engine and popped the bonnet. I saw my air conditioner condenser was hanging skew. The explosion of the ball  under the condenser broke the plastic lugs that was screwed to the body. The screws were still in the lugs but the condenser was hanging out below my front bumper. So I went and  bought some cable ties at the local supermarket and re-secured the condenser as a temporary measure.

I then restarted the car. The EPC light was still on, so I borrowed a spanner at the filling station and disconnected the battery. Since the Polo was all electronic, I figured it would be equivalent to a computer cold reboot when I reconnected. So, after a few moments I reconnected the battery and started the car. The EPC light was off and I could rev the car as normal. I was so chuffed because I could see myself driving home, all of  the 70km distance at 10kpm. When I concluded my business in Melkbos, I was on my way home, about 5km from Melbos Strand when suddenly the EPC light come on again, and once more there was no power. Even with the accelerator pushed-in all the way to the floor, I was still just getting 10kpm. I came to a halt, disconnected the battery for the second time then reconnected it after like 2 minutes, which seemed to have cleared the problem and the engine revved just fine.  For the rest of the day the Volkswagen Polo behaved.

The graphic below shows all the dashboard lights amongst which are the Trailer towing mode indicator light, the Electro-hydraulic power steering malfunctions light, the Fog-lights operation light, the Rear seat lock warning light, the Cruise control light, the Unauthorized key electronic immobilizer continuous flashing light.

What I came to discover later, is that there are 2 knock sensors placed at strategic positions in the engine block, 1 per 2 cylinders. So, any engine noise louder than the knock sensor's preset decibel level, will activate them. This in turn  triggers the Engine Control Module (ECU) which then cuts the power via ODB II  CAN Bus, thus saving the engine from further mechanical damage. However, in my case this wasn't engine trouble but rather an external factor with the same result. The knock sensor or sensors picked up the loud bang of the bursting ball and interpreted it as coming from the engine That's artificial intelligence for you. What I came to understand much later is that Knock sensor K1 caused the EPC light to come on whereas K2 causes the MIL to come on. If both your EPC and MIL is on it could be K1 and K2 related but this should be determined in conjunction with the DTC which can be read with a scan tool from the non-volatile memory of the ECU. My problem turned out to be the potentiometers on the accelerator pedal that was intermittent. I replaced the accelerator pedal and I've never seen that pesky EPC light again.

I have substantially covered the EPC light problem and I suggest you read through all the blog pages discussing the EPC light especially -

    http://volkswagen-polo-highline.blogspot.com/2013/01/electronic-power-control-epc-solution.html

There a number of things that is responsible for the EPC light coming on but before starting to do any wok on your car its best to have a diagnostic check done and have all the errors cleared from memory. Driving fast and breaking violently can also cause your EPC light to come on and like in your case the car will keep on driving. However after starting the engine several times, (over a few days) it will automatically clear the fault. So try not to speed, corner fast and brake suddenly because the EUC also acts like a tachograph since is has the software tachograph installed.

    1. Hi Anonymous

By the sounds of it, you need to replace the accelerator pedal. There are 2 potentiometers fixed to the pedal and cannot be bought nor replaced separately. There is no throttle cable because its has Drive by Wire. They tend to go intermittent and when the ECU detects their intermittent nature, goes into limp mode and turns on the yellow EPC light.

  7. HI Robert Kamau

The yellow EPC light is just an indicator light in the instrument cluster, used to inform you that your car experienced an Electronic Power Control (EPC)issue. Whenever this happens the ECU also stores a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) in its non volatile memory and can be either a generic code or a manufacturer specific code. EPC faults are torque related and would normally be caused by components that assist in propelling the car. However, the nature of the fault and its severity will determine whether or not your car goes into limp mode when the yellow EPC light turns on. If it does go into limp mode, it can still be driven but at a very slow pace because the engine will not rev higher that 2500 rpm, hence it is called limp home mode. The way forward is to have your car scanned by your service agent or by someone with a VCDS diagnostic scanner, or a Vboss, Autel, Innova, Launch or any other OBD2 scanner. The fault code will steer you in the general direction you need to take to fix it. For example A P302 DTC may point you to a intermittent coil (misfire) on cylinder 2 and the freeze frame data will tel you how many times this happened before. Cheers!

  8. My EPC light went on 3 days after someone reversed into the back right brake light. I did some research and found that this may be because of the broken tail light. Can anyone confirm whether this truly is the case?

    1. Hello Unknown

Since the introduction of the Motronic M5.9.2 with its new 80 pin ECM additional input sensors are used for enhanced performance of the torque circuit and the drive by wire circuit.

One of these sensors monitors the physical brake pedal position and another monitors the brake light switch. Should one of the brake light bulbs fail, the sensors would detect an open-circuit or that there is no current flow when the brake pedal is depressed. As a consequence it send an error signal to the ECM which would most likely trigger an EPC fault. So in your case, if your car's right brake light is broken then yes, it is most likely the cause of your woes.

    2. Hi my head beams stay on so I removed the relay now the ecp light stays on an the car doesn't want to rev at all how do I reset this

      Delete
    3. Hi Unknown
Is there any possibility that you removed the wrong relay? There is a probability that when you removed it, the ECU saw the removed relay as a problem with the torque circuit thus turning on the EPC light and engaging limp mode. I think your best bet would be to replace the relay, remove the negative terminal of your car's battery for a few minutes so that the ECU can reset then reconnect the battery. Hopefully this may remedy your problem.

  9. Hi, I have the same problem with my car Polo 2003 1.4 BBY-engine, but the car switches off and will not start again. i cannot keep track of how many times i have towed this car. it will eventually start after 2 hours. We have had it at a mechanic... who redone my engine thinking it was the engine going as my car used about 3 pines of oil every 2 weeks. only to discover the problem got worst. This problem happens at least once a week. The computer does not pick up any faults which i cannot understand. The auto electrician says its over fueling but i am concerned that this is not the case. Any suggestions?

  10. Hi Anonymous
A VW Polo 1.4 Petrol BBY engine is a series 9N VW, which shares similar mechanical and electrical issues with Seat Ibiza and the Skoda Fabia. A common problem with these cars is a DTC P0501, and the culprit is the Vehicle Speed Sensor that goes out of range. However, when it cools down it somhow goes back into range and allows the car to start. This seems to be the issue with your car. The fact that your car use 2 pints of oil every three weeks doesn't sound good at all, either your car is smoking like a locomotive of its leaving a trail of oil dots wherever you go. Over fueling is very unlikely and rather seems to be the kind of problems associated with diesel vehicles. I would also suggest you use a different scan tool like VCDS perhaps so that you can get an informative diagnostic scan.

    1. Hi dude!
The Polo with SDI engine is fairly reliability and economical with very few problems. Since you already replaced the battery, it is very possible the battery or earth strap may not be making good contact with the car body. This will unboubtedly cause the speedometer and trip display to misbehave. However the best solution is to have a diagnostic scan of your car and post it here, then it would be a breeze to diagnose it correctly.

    1. Hi Anonymous,

Seems like you encountered the classic VW Beetle over heating problem. There are at least four issues that contribute to overheating, the first one is water leaking at the junction flange, that where the pipes converge. You will notice the coolant level dropping. The second is the wires to the fan that runs underneath the battery and its connections above the battery corrodes, breaking power flow to the fans. The third is the fan itself that does open circuit. Test you fan, it has three wires, brown is earth, the white/red is slow speed and the black/red is high speed. And the fourth is the plastic impeller of the water pump that becomes brittle and crumbles/ disintegrates, thus doesn't circulate the water as it should. Seeing you at 90000, it is the recommended millage that you have to replace the water pump / thermostat and the timing belt. Cheers

  15. Last night I had to drive a section of gravel road in order to get home. When I hit the asphault the car lost all power, epc came on, limp mode engaged and I limped home. When I selected neutral gear the car died and would not start, the car sounded like there was no compression when I did try starting it. EPC light is still on this morning and still sounds like no compression. Please advise

    1. Hello Jade

From the briefness of your comment I hope you made it home safely without incident. My deduction is that the shuddering of the car on the gravel road could have caused something to shake loose, that's needed to keep the engine idling, like the multi-pin plug to your ECU. Or it could be that your crank sensor went awry or its cable that got damaged by a gravel stone seeing it's positioned at the side of the engine but almost underneath where it could be dinged by flying projectiles. Or perhaps one of your car's oxygen sensor / wiring got dinged since it sits in the exhaust line. I think that when you selected neutral gear and the car switching-off is just coincidental. A faulty crank sensor/wiring will prevent the engine from starting and depending on the type of engine you have -(you didn't say). If your car has INA electronic camshaft/valve lash adjustment that has gone faulty, it can keep the valves open, hence gives the sound of no compression. However it could be also be that your cam belt snapped at that moment presenting the same symptoms. Since it costs nothing, I suggest you disconnect your car's battery (negative terminal) for a few minutes, allowing the ECU to reset all previous learnt driving episodes and styles, then reconnect it. Hopefully it may just be a software synchronization glitch and by disconnecting the battery it would reset.

  16. Hi i have a 2007 automatic 3 door Polo
Last week i had to break heavily at lights and later noticed EPC light on. I had also changed left side break bulb the day before. I now have no left tail light but the same bulb works fine as the break light. When i turn lights on with no engine 1 click neither left tail light nor front left light come on but right side fine. Fuses all seem ok. Any help greatly appreciated. Vikki

    1. Hi Vikki

You problem could be something as simple as a bad connection at the light socket or as grievous as a wiring loom problem. Best thing to do is replace the light bulbs with the correct/appropriate ones and if possible spray the light sockets with electrical contact spray. Hopefully you problem may be solved. Make certain that you don't insert a double contact bulb in place of a single contact bulb as could could short-out the ECU.

    1. Hi Riaz

By the sound of things, it could be the two accelerator potentiometer situated on the accelerator pedal that's starting to play up. A simple check is to physically pull the accelerator pedal upwards by hand. If the revs go down to 800rpm and you release the pedal and the revs climb to over 2000rpm then its time that you replace the accelerator pedal. there is a a plug 6 pin plug attached to the accelerator, take care when unplugging because the wires are fairly thin. If you go to http://volkswagen-polo-highline.blogspot.co.za/2014/10/epc-demystified-continued_21.html there is an explanation on how to check the wiring loom before replacing the accelerator pedal.
      Al the best.

    1. Hello there!

There fact that you said the EPC light first came on when you filled up, appears that the EVAP circuit is malfunctioning (cant build up pressure)because your petrol cap may not be sealing properly. It may be as simple as that. Best of luck.

      Delete
    2. what effect would that have. Ithought it might be that but made sure it was on properly. Soemething else i noticet was whe im drivin and put my lights on, i temporarily lose power until i completely release the accelerator. Then it seems to be fine.

      Delete
    3. Hi Andrew

Your car has an EVAP System Leak Detection System and if malfunctions, will set a P2025 DTC. Also when EVAP System Pressure Sensor malfunctions it will set a P0452 DTC. Both these sensors are inputs to the ECU and when there is a problem, can trigger an EPC fault. The EVAP system is essentially a canister containing carbon that collects the in-tan fuel vapours for recycling. Part of the OBD-II specifications is that no fuel vapours escape into the atmosphere. If the fuel cap doesn't seal, the EVAP cannot built up pressure and sends the ECU a signal that may trigger the EPC because fumes are escaping into the atmosphere. Hope that helps.

I have a 2014 polo vivo, I have had it serviced in the last 3 weeks also had fuel filter replaced, I did +-2300km since then, recently I noticed if I have the car idling I cannot rev it past 3500, it also has a slight misfire, I also noticed while driving it revs past 4000rpm but then the EPC light comes on and the car looses power forcing me to pull over and switch the car off and then back on to which the EPC light goes off and I can drive the car again.

what could be causing this problem?

    1. HI there!

Having problems with a 2014 Polo isn't a good sign. There is currently a VW recall, so its in you interest to pursue it. perhaps your car is included.

The most likely component to cause this type of symptoms is the accelerator pedal potentiometers which is part of the the actual pedal. But before you replace it, make certain that the you have at DTC related to the pedal position senders / throttle sensors.

      Example:-
      P1639
      P1631
      P1634
      P1542
      P1173

    ReplyDelete
  26. A 16955 / P0571 DTC is an Implausible Brake Switch Signal. What this means is at a certain point in time when the ECU read the break switch it could determine its validity, hence it flagged a DTC. Check your fuses and if possible try and spray come electrical cleaner into the brake pedal switch. There is something called switch bounce and digital systems don't like switch bounce and tend to complain when they encounter it. Would be worth while resetting the ECU by disconnecting your battery earth terminal for a minute or two but only it you have the radio code.

  27. Hi,
I have a VW Touran 2.0 FSI, I do have a problem with my car but it seems no one could identify the problem even the VW agency it self. The problem is the car is vibrate a little when I stop or when I am driving its sometimes I loss the power even if I press the accelerated pedal and also its vibrate with a little jump but it doesn't last for long time just for a few seconds. I went and diagnostic it many times but always there is no fault code comes, I have replaced so many things such as: accelerated pedal.
    lambada sensor.
    manifold pressure sensor.
    air filter sensor.
    camshaft sensor,
    the ignition coil,
    spark plug,
    plug coil,
    exhaust temperature sensor,
    nox sensor.
but still having the same problem, few days ago the EPC light lighted up when I was driving for few seconds but after it was turned off again. hope you can help me, The VW agency said maybe the spreader or an electrical problem but they are not sure even

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi there!

I sympathize with you for all the grief you had with your Volkswagen Touran. Vibrations can be a difficult problem to solve because a tie rod end vibration is different to a vibration caused by an open circuit/ faulty ignition coil or a failed spark plug, different to a vibration caused by a torque converter and different to a vibration caused by unevenly worn tyres or wheel alignment. But since your vibration comes and goes, it could be the suspension settings. If your vehicle has settings, change it from 1 to 2 then after a while back to 1. This may alleviate the problem, and if it noticeably does, your problem is most likely suspension related. The notorious "vibration under acceleration death wobble" may be caused by worn tyres, a bent wheel hub, the axle itself, worn wheel bearings, steering stabilizer bushing, propshaft damper and especially the steering damper when shaking becomes evident when driving over pot holes and uneven surfaces. Virtually none of these mechanical items are monitored by sensors hence no DTCs. It could also turn out to be an intermittent wiring loom to your ignition coils but that should have left a trouble code, however if you continually drive your car and the vibration doesn't present itself during five drive cycles, the ECU erases the DTC and there's none when you check.

  30. Hi Wesinator23

It seems like you have an electrical open circuit in your accelerator pedal wiring harness. Bear in mind if you unplug and completely remove the accelerator pedal then start your car, it will start and idle perfectly but since the pedal is missing it won't be able to rev. So what you have, sounds like a disconnected accelerator pedal.

Go to http://volkswagen-polo-highline.blogspot.co.za/2014/10/epc-demystified-continued_21.html and check under EPC Circuit for the continuity checks for the 6 pin accelerator plug. You can also see what the plug looks like here. http://volkswagen-polo-highline.blogspot.co.za/2016/11/how-to-fix-epc-problem-continued.html

  31. Its quite baffling to see so many issues that lights up the EPC warning sign. Just yesterday my 07 Polo 1.6 did that, I noticed my brake lights was on when I switched on my park/headlights and figured it was the brake light switch but being overly-cautious and just to be sure as it is the first time experiencing this issue, I did the scan and as expected, it is the brake light switch and a blown bulb (one of the brights).

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Timmy

Thanks for you input. Yes EPC faults are quite common and on your car, the Speedo cruise input is taken from the brake light circuit. Meaning when the brake is applied the speedo cruise circuit detects the activated brake switch and cancels the speedo cruise operation. With a faulty bulb, speedo cruise circuit is disabled causing EPC (limp mode to kick in). So the EPC prevents you from having a potential accident if speedo cruise could cut out.

    Cheers!

    Replies
    1. Hi Jeff

The 01674 code you got, has nothing to do with fuel or starting the car, it is has to do with your AICC (Autonomous Intelligent Cruise Control) brake pressure solenoid trip switch.

However, do you at least have a few litres of fuel in the tank now. Unless you have sufficient fuel in the tank to refill the fuel pump and refill the fuel filter and there is enough the satisfy the fuel level sensor and the fuel pressure regulator, she's not going to start, remember your pump was drawing vacuum that caused air bubbles in the fuel. The pump needs to be able to suck fuel from the tank and build up pressure to open the injectors. It's very unlikely that the PCM relay went fault at the exact moment you ran out of fuel. However you may not have run out of fuel in the first place and the PCM relay has gone bad. Difficult to tell with limited information. Remember that anything to do with engine torque will trigger the EPC light, for example, lack fuel pressure. Lack of oil or low engine oil pressure can send a safety circuit signal to the ECM to shut-off the fuel pump. Even if the fuel cap isn't closed properly will give you an EPC light. Cheers!

  34. Hi Faried

I'm reading the information that VW coolant comes in concentrated form and that it must be diluted using DISTILLED water to a 50/50 concentration. Please unpack what this exactly means in plain simple English.

    1. Hi there!

Coolant comes in a pre-mix form or as a concentrate. Anti-freeze ethylene glycol-based engine coolant concentrate is a bit of a paradox since it needs to be mixed with distilled water. Engine coolant concentrated is in fact distilled water with a number of chemicals added, whereas distilled water is a volume of water with most of its chemical impurities removed.
In my opinion, the best distilled water is rain water that is caught in a clean plastic bucket. Plastic to reduce metal contaminants.

Be that as it may, the resultant mix is a algea inhibitor and a corrosion inhibitor that protects coolant system metals from pitting. It also prevents the engine coolant from freezing at very low temperatures and also elevates the water's natural boiling point.

So if you buy 1 litre of engine coolant concentrate and mix it with 1 litre of distilled water you have a 50/50 mix of two litres, and if you buy a 1.5 litre of Engine coolant concentrate and mix it with 1.5 litre of distilled water then you have a 50/50 mix of 3 litres, etc. However, the ratio of anti-freeze coolant to water ratio for the engine is dependent on your local climate. If you live in an area were it is very cold like in freezing with degees below freezing then a 70 percent 50/50 to a 30 percent water ratio is best, but if you live in a hot climate then a 30 percent 50/50 to a 70 percent water is best.

Try not to mix blue, purple, green, pink and red anti-freeze since each have different properties. Every car manufacturer have there own preference and would recommend their own brands. Like VW will promote the VW G11 / VW G12 / VW G 13, Mercedes will promote Zerex G-05 Coolant, etc. However, the type of coolant required for a particular model is normally stamped on the expansion tank and can also be found in the vehicle owner's manual under chapter coolant.

  35. Hi again

Since it is recommended that the VW coolant be diluted with distilled water. Would I be opening my car to damage should I opt to put coolant in car while it's still in its concentrated form as purchased from the dealership?

    Thanking you in advance.

    1. Hi Charles

Read the above reply. If you add the concentrate directly into your expansion tank without diluting doesn't present a problem, because the water to concentrate ratio will always be greater than 50/50.
